Fat Around The Liver
What Causes Fatty Liver Disease?
Fat around the liver is a phrase many people use to describe a
condition doctors call fatty liver disease. Fat around the liver is a growing health problem in the United
States and Canada. In fact, fatty liver disease recently overtook cirrhosis as the number one liver-related disease in these countries.
The goal of this article is to provide basic and introductory information about the dangers,
causes and symptoms of fat around the liver. The article is intended to familiarize readers with no medical
training or background. It is not intended for medical professionals.
Fat around the liver may also be called fatty liver syndrome. It occurs when an abnormal amount
of fat accumulates on the liver. Here's how this happens.
Your liver performs numerous functions and does many jobs and related to metabolism. One task
is producing a type of fat called triglycerides. These help build new cells and some important hormones. Fat
around the liver begins to grow when there is an oversupply of triglycerides and several other types of fat.
As fat around the liver accumulates, the liver can become inflamed. This inflammation can scar
the liver - a process known as cirrhosis. More fat causes more inflammation. More inflammation causes more
scarring. More scarring degrades liver function. As liver function is compromised, the danger of liver failure
grows, although this is not typical in those with fatty liver syndrome.
Long-term alcohol use is one of the most common causes of fat around the liver.
It's not easy to diagnose fat around the liver because fatty liver disease typically presents no
symptoms in the early stages. As a result, many people with fatty liver don't realize they have liver trouble. When
symptoms of fat around the liver do appear, they may include the following
-
abdominal swelling and pain or tenderness on the right side near the bottom of the rib cage
-
overall itchiness
-
occasional fevers
-
jaundice, or yellowing of the skin, or small yellow nodules on the skin
Any of these should conditions could be a sign that there's too much fat around the liver. As
soon as any of these symptoms present themselves, the patient should consult a doctor. He or she is likely to order
liver function tests, which can detect the presence of fat around the liver.
It's hard to know how many people in the U.S. and Canada have excessive fat around the liver, or
fatty liver disease. There are some estimates stating that it may be as high as one individual in five.
