Is Hepatitis B Curable?
Hepatitis B Drugs
No cure exists for hepatitis B. The goal of hepatitis B treatment is to
-
decrease the hepatitis B virus' ability to multiply
-
decrease inflammation and liver damage, and increase the immune system’s capability of fighting off the
hepatitis B virus.
If you have chronic hepatitis B, you should see your health care
provider regularly for hepatitis B treatment.
Liver diseases, including cirrhosis and liver cancer, can eventually result from hepatitis B.
But acute hepatitis B usually goes away by itself and does not require medical treatment.
If the hepatitis B infection becomes severe, the patient may become dehydrated from vomiting or
diarrhea. Administration of intravenous fluids may be needed to restore fluids and electrolytes.
No medications are currently available that can prevent acute hepatitis B from becoming chronic
hepatitis B.
There are however, six hepatitis b drugs are now often used for hepatitis B
treatment. NOTE: These medications should not be used by pregnant women.
Adefovir dipivoxil, entecavir, interferon-alpha and lamivudine are hepatitis b drugs that have
been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
If you are taking any of these medications, be sure to inform your health care provider if you
begin to experience frequent diarrhea or constipation, orange or dark urine, abdominal pain, or discoloration of
the skin.
Liver function tests done regularly regularly to
measure the progress of hepatitis b, and to make sure no complications are developing.
