How Liver Pain Occurs
Interestingly, the liver itself is insensitive. In other words, when there's something wrong in the liver, you
won't feel any pain. But the liver covered by two layers of peritoneum which are referred to as the Glisson’s
capsule. The capsule is not insensitive, so when inflammation occurs and it is stretched, it produces pain in
the upper right quadrant of the body.
There are literally dozens of causes for inflammation, but the most common are cirrhosis and many types of hepatitis.
Another condition that causes liver pain is known as biliary colic. This condition results from an obstruction of the
biliary tract. The obstruction, which is often a stone, stretches the duct. Pain comes on quickly, lasts a few
minutes, and then fades. But it's almost detrain to return.
Pain from biliary colic usually presents in the upper middle quadrant or the right upper
quadrant. It may then radiate to the back and cause pain between the shoulder blades. Eating a large fatty meal
often triggers the pain.
