Milk Thistle Liver Cleanse

Liver Detox Home Remedy

liver detox home remedyA lot of people have heard that milk thistle is a terrific liver detox home remedy. But we'd all like to know, of course, if there is any real science to back up the theory.

The answer is a definite "maybe."

Raman Venkataramanan, PhD, FCP, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences and pathology at the University of Pittsburgh, says there has recently been research on animals to determine if a milk thistle liver cleanse really detoxifies the liver.

Dr.Venkataramanan says studies he and his colleagues have done suggest there may be beneficial effect of milk thistle extract.

There has also been research by Bharat B. Aggarwal, PhD, a professor of cancer medicine at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Aggarwal says his studies have suggested that silymarin, an extract of milk thistle, acts on biochemical pathways to aid in liver detoxification.

"In the laboratory, silymarin is quite protective against liver damage," Aggarwal has told WebMD. "It is approved in Europe for liver damage, especially that induced by alcohol, and seems to have no adverse effects."

Many doctors will tell you that the liver does a marvelous job cleansing itself and doesn't really need much "outside" help from supplements like milk thistle. But medical professionals also admit that the liver can sometimes face a challenge handling the onslaught of rich, fatty foods, alcohol, sugar and caffeine that it sometimes has to process. This could be especially during the holidays.

The liver and kidneys are the main "purification plants" of the human body. Toxins pass through the liver where they are broken down and removed from the blood. The kidneys perform a similar function in processing urine.

If we put fewer toxins and harmful substances into our bodies, the job facing the liver and kidneys becomes easier. Drinking about wight glasses of water a day helps. So does a healthy diet of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Keeping fried foods to a minimum helps too.

The natural process of liver cleansing is also easier if we don't smoke or use harmful recreational drugs.

But it's not always easy to do what's best in this hectic, stress-filled 24/7 world. And when we don't do all the things we should to keep our liver and kidneys healthy, detoxification may turn out to be a good idea.

More and more laboratory research seems to confirm that milk thistle can be part of a liver cleansing regimen.

Antioxidant vitamins may have some value too. Look for foods that contain vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene, along with minerals such as zinc and selenium.

B vitamins aid alcohol metabolism.

There are a number of other herbs that may help liver cleansing in addition to milk thistle. These include dandelion root, and schizandra.

There is still much to be learned about the ability of supplements like milk thistle to live up to its reputation as a liver detox home remedy. But research in this area is ongoing, and so far, the results appear to be promising.
