Is Liver Detoxification Really Necessary?

Many natural health experts have been touting the merits of liver cleansing or "liver detox"in recent years.

Liver cleansing and other detoxification processes, they say, clear the body of pesticides, chemical, allergens, irritants and other substances that are found in food and the environment.

Doctors and nutrition experts aren't so sure if there's really much value to liver cleansing, however.

"The body cleanses itself," says Dr. Arthur Talansky of North Shore Gastroenterology in Great Neck New York. Dr. Talansky recently told Newsday, "There's an equilibrium in the bowel, secretions, bacteria and things in the gut. There's no reason to disturb that equilibrium."

But Jessica Ross, president of Ultimate Energy Cleanse Inc. claims "You want your body to get the correct fuel to run optimally. We'll take our car and get a tune-up or an oil change. You need to do the same thing with your body." Ultimate Energy Cleanse Inc. is a Huntington, NY-based company that has developed a cleansing diet that can found and on the Internet and at health-food stores.

Dr. Talansky, who has been in practice for 25 years, says liver "detox diets" are unnecessary. "There's a normal forest of flora and bacteria in the body, and they're there for a reason."

"Just as you wouldn't think about flushing out your lungs," he continues, "You shouldn't do that to your GI tract"

Ross reports that there have no claims of adverse health effects from anyone who has used their product.

Proponents agree anyone who's thinking about starting a liver cleansing diet should talk to their doctor first, especially with existing medical problems.

Pregnant women are advised to skip a liver cleansing diet altogether.
