Liver Disease Stages
Liver Disease Stages: The Basics
Liver disease stages occur in a number of different ways, depending on the specific liver disease involved. Here are four different problems that affect liver health and compromise liver function.
Inflammation of the liver This liver disease stage is characterized by liver
inflammation. Patients often show no symptoms, but there may sometimes be a certain amount of liver pain or discomfort is possible.
Certain conditions cause the liver to become inflamed. The most common one is alcohol and
chemical abuse. Some industrial compounds and pollutants may also affect the liver.
Fibrosis, or scarring of liver tissue
Fibrosis or scarring of the liver tissue is another stage of liver disease. This usually occurs
after the liver has been inflamed and swollen for a long period. This is the stage at which liver functions may
begin to slowly degrade.
Cirrhosis The third liver disease stage is called cirrhosis. Most people call
it cirrhosis of the liver, but medically speaking, the term cirrhosis is all you need to say.
When liver has been subject to damage from inflammation and fibrosis, it begins to function
improperly, or begins to lose function. Scar tissue accumulates and blocks blood flow through the liver.
At this stage, symptoms become more noticeable:
-
bruising and bleeding
-
diabetes
-
edema
-
enlargement
-
gallstones
-
jaundice
Cancer Inflammation of the liver, scarring and cirrhosis may eventually lead to
liver cancer, which is extremely serious. Liver cancer affects approximately 4% of patients
with cirrhosis, and is frequently fatal.
A liver transplant may be necessary to treat liver cancer.
