Liver Panel Tests
Is There a Difference Between "Liver Function Tests" and a "Liver
Panel?"
In a word, no. There's no difference in the
meanings of the words liver function tests vs. liver panel. Other names include hepatic function tests and
LFTs.
A liver panel is actually a series of seven different liver function tests that detect,
evaluate, and monitor liver disease or damage.
When someone enters a rehabilitation center with an alcohol problem or chemical dependency,
liver function tests are run almost immediately to determine the level of liver damage drinking or drug use may have caused to the liver.
When alcohol or drug use are not part of the diagnostic picture, liver function tests may be
ordered in response to symptoms of liver problems. These symptoms might include:
-
abdomen pain or swelling
-
dark urine
-
diarrhea, light-colored bowel movements or bloody, black bowel movements
-
fatigue or loss of stamina
-
jaundice
-
loss of appetite
-
nausea,
-
unusual weight change
-
vomiting (including vomiting up blood)
One or more of these tests may also be ordered if hepatitis is suspected.
Liver function tests are important because there may be few early symptoms of liver disease.
Liver function tests can help your doctor with a diagnosis before liver disease symptoms appear.
