What Is Liver Pain?

What is liver pain? Where is liver pain? What causes pain in the liver area? Are liver pains dangerous? These are questions that will be answered in this article.

Liver pain affects different individuals in different ways. Some say they suffer severe liver pain and it feels as if their liver is going to burst.

Pain in the liver area usually occurs the right front of the torso, near the bottom of the ribcage. But some patients even experience liver pain in the right shoulder, causing discomfort when they breath in, or cough.

Others say their liver pain isn't sharp at all, but is rather a dull, aching tenderness or discomfort in the area of the lower rib cage. These people say they feel somewhat swollen or bloated.

Liver pain causes may be related to a problem involving the liver itself, but liver pains can also be the secondary result of a problem with another part of the body, particularly the bladder, blood vessels, or the biliary tract.

If the liver itself is causing the pain, it's usually due to an inflammation of some kind. Inflammation is one of the most common causes of liver pains.

If pain in the liver area isn't coming directly from the liver, it may be due to an obstruction of the biliary tract, like a stone. This type of liver pain, also known as biliary colic, can usually comes on suddenly and may last as long as several hours. Discomfort begins in the upper middle quadrant or the right upper quadrant, and may radiate to the area between the shoulder blades or to the shoulder.

Liver pains from biliary colic are most likely to happen after you've eaten a fatty meal.

Other causes of pain in the liver area include cholangitis or inflammation of the biliary duct, gallbladder disease, hepatitis, and liver abscess. Sometimes, liver cysts can also cause liver pain.

Certain medications are generlly effective in relieving pain in the liver area:

• NSAIDs or Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which decrease the symptoms of swelling and pain.
• Meperidine (also known as Demerol)
• Morphine
